COLOMBO(News 1st); The Colombo North Crimes Division says that a stock of chemicals suspected to be used in manufacturing the drug Ice, found in the Middeniya area, will be examined by the Government Analyst today.
The stock, weighing 50,000 kilograms, is to be handed over to the Middeniya Police for further investigations.
Both the Government Analyst's Department and the National Dangerous Drugs Control Board are continuing their inquiries.
Meanwhile, police said officers from the Police Special Task Force and Middeniya Police have been deployed to secure the site where the chemicals were discovered.
The find came after the interrogation of organized criminal Backhoe Saman, currently held by the Colombo North Crimes Division.
Based on his information, the chemicals were found yesterday on land owned by Sampath Manamperi in Middeniya.
Manamperi, a former Provincial Councilor, has reportedly maintained close ties with Backhoe Saman and has been missing since the criminal group, including Saman, was brought back into the country.
He had contested the Thalawa division of the Angunakolapelessa Pradeshiya Sabha under the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna in the last local government election but was defeated.
Police are currently working to locate and arrest him.
Statements have been recorded from his wife, brother, and two other relatives, according to the Colombo North Crimes Division.
