A decision has been made to appoint a special committee to propose measures for ensuring food safety within the Parliament’s catering services. The move was announced during a meeting of the House Committee chaired by Speaker Dr. Jagath Wickramaratne.

According to the Department of Communications of Parliament, the committee will be tasked with identifying shortcomings in the current infrastructure and addressing other related issues in the food and beverage section of Parliament.

The proposed committee is expected to include:

The area’s Medical Officer of Health (MOH)
Public Health Inspectors (PHIs)
A specialist engineer or architect from the State Engineering Corporation with expertise in kitchen operations
The Director of Parliamentary Food and Housekeeping Services
The Parliament’s coordinating engineer

In addition to food safety, the House Committee also discussed the maintenance and service delivery issues at official residences of Members of Parliament in the Madivela housing complex.

The Speaker instructed relevant officials to take immediate steps to resolve any deficiencies.
