Colombo (News 1st): 3,018 Kg of Beedi Leaves, bundled into 52 parcels that were floating in the sea off Karethivu have been recovered by the Sri Lanka Navy. The Navy suspect this may have been an attempt to smuggle the stock of beedi leaves into the country, illegally.
Steps have been taken to hand over the stock of Beedi leaves to the Office of the Director-General of Customs, for further investigations. The Navy has also recovered 904 Kg of Beedi leaves in 21 parcels, in the seas north of the Thalaimannar lighthouse.
The Navy added it had taken custody of more than 48,000 Kgs of Beedi Leaves following raids conducted up do date, this year.
