COLOMBO (News 1st); Six police officers who were arrested and remanded in custody in connection with an alleged assault on a Catholic priest have been suspended from duty.

Police Spokesman, Assistant Superintendent of Police F. U. Wootler, stated that the suspended officers include three sergeants and three police constables.

The six suspect officers were further remanded until the 29th.

This decision was made when the case was taken up yesterday (26) before Gampaha Chief Magistrate Seelani Perera.

The suspect police officers were not produced in open court, and the Magistrate also ordered that they be produced for an identification parade on the 29th.

President’s Counsel Neville Abeyratne, appearing on behalf of the Catholic priest who was allegedly assaulted, informed court that the priest remains hospitalized and is continuing to receive treatment.

The six police officers were arrested the day before yesterday (25) following a complaint made by the Catholic priest.
