COLOMBO (News 1st); President Anura Kumara Dissanayake reaffirmed that the government formed by the people will not grant any form of protection to drug traffickers or organised criminal groups.

He made these remarks during the Northern Province segment of the national anti-narcotics programme held at the Jaffna College of Technology grounds.

Addressing the gathering, the President said Sri Lanka’s ongoing effort to eliminate drug trafficking and addiction is a mission that will not be reversed.

He added that the public expects a law enforcement system free from political interference and pledged that senior officials responsible for national security will not be influenced by criminal networks.

He noted that, in the past, certain officials tasked with enforcing discipline had been revealed to have had dealings with individuals involved in narcotics and underworld activities. The President said the government has now restructured the mechanism for arrests and investigations.

During the ceremony, the President presented certificates of appreciation to police officers in the Northern Province in recognition of their contributions to anti-drug operations.

He urged all officers to refrain from maintaining any links or dealings with drug networks, stating that such behaviour is incompatible with public service.

The President said officers who continue to engage in such activities must choose either to abandon those connections or step away from their duties. He stressed that no official will be allowed to perform their role while maintaining ties with drug traffickers or underworld elements.
