COLOMBO(News1st); The Election Commission has announced that 36 applications for the registration of new political parties have been rejected.
Chairman R.M.A.L. Ratnayake stated that these applications were rejected because they did not meet the basic required qualifications.
He also mentioned that around 80 applications in total were received for new party registrations.
Interviews are currently underway for the remaining 44 applications.
At present, the number of officially recognized political parties registered with the Election Commission stands at 83.
