Fisheries Ministry To Tackle Illegal Fishing

COLOMBO(News 1st); The Fisheries Ministry has decided to launch district-level joint operations to combat illegal fishing activities.

This decision was made during a special discussion chaired by Fisheries Minister 
Ramalingam Chandrasekar.

The operations will be carried out across all 15 coastal districts through joint district coordination committees.

These committees will include representatives from the Navy, Police, Coast Guard, Fisheries Department, and the fishing community. The Ministry stated that formal plans will be created to tackle illegal fishing effectively.

Additionally, two telephone numbers have been introduced to report illegal activities at sea immediately 105 for the Navy and 106 for the Coast Guard.

Amendments to the current Fisheries Act are also being considered to strengthen actions against illegal fishing practices.
