COLOMBO(News 1st); The Attorney General's Department has announced that it will submit its recommendations to the government within the next week regarding the implementation of the Supreme Court’s ruling on the environmental damage caused by the X-Press Pearl ship fire.

A team of senior officials has prepared the recommendations after studying the ruling.

These recommendations will guide the government on implementing the Supreme Court’s order, securing compensation, and handling the ongoing legal case related to the incident in Singapore.

The Attorney General’s Department also said it has issued directives to several government institutions on the steps to be taken in response to the environmental damage, in line with the Supreme Court’s decision.

On July 24, the Supreme Court ordered the ship’s owner, its local agent, and other responsible parties to pay US$1 billion in compensation within a year for the marine environmental and economic damage caused by the fire near the Colombo Port.

As per the ruling, the compensation can be paid in installments, with the first installment due by September 23.
