Magnitude 6.6 earthquake off North Sumatra: Sri Lankan coasts declared safe

COLOMBO (News 1st) - The National Tsunami Early Warning Centre of the Department of Meteorology says that a 6.6 magnitude earthquake occurred in the Indian Ocean at about 10.49 am this morning, off North Sumatra.
The Department of Meteorology says that there is no tsunami threat to Sri Lanka at present with the effect of the earthquake and that therefore, the coastal areas of Sri Lanka are declared safe.
The Department says that the message is announced in consultation with relevant national and international agencies.
