COLOMBO (News 1st) - Plans have been put in place to release fertilizer under a quota system at fair prices through government intervention.
Namal Karunaratne, the Deputy Minister of Agriculture, stated that this decision was made to control fertilizer prices in the market.
Meanwhile, a shipment carrying 25,000 metric tons of urea fertilizer is scheduled to arrive in the country today.
The Minister added that additional stocks of urea fertilizer have also been ordered.
The total amount of urea fertilizer required for paddy cultivation in the Yala season is 80,000 tons.
Speaking to Newsfirst, Deputy Minister Karunaratne also said that steps will be taken to pay the fertilizer subsidy in full at the beginning of the season.
