Parliament approves civil society representatives to the Constitutional Council

COLOMBO (News 1st) - The Sri Lankan parliament on Wednesday (18) approved the names of three civil society representatives who need to be appointed to the Constitutional Council formed via the 21st Amendment to the Constitution.

Former Minister Secretary Dr. Prathap Ramanujam, Former Chairperson of the Sri Lanka Medical Association Dr. (Mrs) Dilkushi Anula Wijesundere, and  Dr. (Mrs) Weligama Vidana Arachchige Dinesha Samararatne from the University of Colombo were appointed as the civil society representatives to the Constitutional Council.

Following the appointment of the Civil Society representatives, the Constitutional Council can start functioning paving the way to appoint new Chairpersons and members to independent commissions including the National Election Commission.
