Fishermen continue protests for fuel

COLOMBO (News 1st); The protest initiated by Chilaw fishermen demanding subsidy for kerosene continues for the 12th day today (27).

Roshan Fernando, the Acting Chairman of the Joint Fisheries Organization, said that the authorities have not yet responded to their requests.

Meanwhile, a special discussion on providing the kerosene subsidy for fishermen is due to be held next Monday (29).

The relevant discussion will be held with the participation of officials from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the President's Secretariat and the Ministry of Finance.

Indu Karunaratne, the secretary of the Ministry of Fisheries, stated that steps will be taken to provide immediate relief to the fishermen who are suffering due to the increase in the price of petroleum.

She also stated that the distribution of petroleum and diesel required for fishermen is being done in a systematic manner.
