TUs to launch nationwide hartal on 6th

COLOMBO (News 1st); The trade unions have planned to launch a nationwide hartal on May 6th, taking the people's struggle one step further.

The National Trade Union Alliance clarified their future steps today (02), with the National Trade Union Center member, K.D. Lal Kantha pointing out that no matter who struggles, the reality is that the only answer being to grant the people an election, giving the people a new chance to participate in politics and to give them a new administration to create political stability in the country.

He emphasized that political stability is the only answer to reaching economic stability within Sri Lanka.

The Convener of the National Trade Union Center, Wasantha Samarasinghe stated that the hartal will be staged in hopes of success of the people and their struggle as well.

Meanwhile, Mahinda Jayasinghe, the General Secretary of the Ceylon Teachers' Service Union said that the only demand of the people is for the Government, including the President and the Prime Minister to step down without further oppressing the people. 

Chandana Sooriyarachchi, the General Secretary of the Development Officer Service Association said that the May 6th hartal will be a message to the people of the entire country that working people are united and will carry the struggle forward until the Government steps down.

Dr. Jayantha Bandara, the Secretary of the All Ceylon Medical Officers Association also added that health workers too will join the hartal on 6th, without any trade union division.
