GMOA warns of possible new COVID-19 variant if guidelines are not followed

COLOMBO (News 1st); The Government Medical Officers Association (GMOA) warns that if the people do not follow the health guidelines properly, especially during the upcoming festive season, there is a higher possibility of an emergence of a new COVID-19 variant. Dr. Navin De Soyza, the Assistant Secretary of GMOA stated that it has been observed that there are no proper safety measures have been followed by the public when using public transport. He further stated that the GMOA had observed that there are certain lapses on ministerial levels when implementing the decisions taken at the COVID task force meeting. Dr. Soyza went on to say that the people had already forgotten the severe COVID situation which was in the country, and if ignored, there is a higher possibility of an emergence of a new COVID variant. "If that happens, it will cause a huge impact for the countries economy and the social structures," The GMOA Assistance Secretary said. Emphasizing that he expects the public to follow the prescribed health guidelines, Dr. Soyza reiterated that everyone needs to wear a proper face mask, wash hands and maintain the social distance, at least for one more year in order to defeat the virus.
