Teachers to return to schools on Monday (25) for academic activities only

COLOMBO (News 1st); Teachers will return to schools only for academic activities tomorrow (25), said the teachers' and principals' unions.

The Ministry of Education has decided to recommence the primary sections of schools more than 200 students from tomorrow (25), in line with the recommendations of the COVID-19 prevention committee.

Under the first phase, the primary sections of schools with less than 200 students commenced on 21st October, despite the ongoing teacher's union strike.

Meanwhile, the Secretary of the Ceylon Teacher's Union, Joseph Starlin said that teachers will only be returning to schools for the purpose of teaching the students only.

He went onto further state that teachers will not be doing any of the Government-mandated work, but will be carrying out only the academic activities for the students and parents.

Moreover, the Chairman of the All Ceylon United Teachers Union, Ven. Yalwela Pannasekara Thero said that the teachers will be reporting to work only for academic purposes.

Moreover, the General Secretary of the Ceylon Teachers' Service Union, Mahinda Jayasinghe stated that the union will no longer participate in talks with Government authorities, however the strike will continue.

Citing the steps taken by the Communist Party to oust Uva Province Governor Raja Collure from the Chairmanship, he also stated that Governors do not have the power to make such statements, and challenged the Governor to meet with the teachers and principals of the Kurunegala District.
