COLOMBO (News 1st): Dr. Nalin Kithulwatte, the Consultant paediatric intensivist at the Lady Ridgeway Hospital for children says that the ICU beds at LRH reserved for COVID patients has reached its limit.

Speaking to the media on Tuesday (24), Dr. Kithulwatte said there are only six ICU beds in the entire hospital, which are currently full.

He went on to note that hospital is facing severe staff shortage as the trained ICU staff including Doctors and nurses have also contracted COVID-19.

He added that however, at Karapitiya Teaching Hospital, where it is possible to treat 7 patients in the Childrens ICU, there are only 3 patients being treated.

Dr. Kitulwatte stated that this is due to staff members of the hospital, including Doctors and nurses being infected with COVID-19.

He added that if more staff members get infected with COVID-19, it could prove to be a dangerous situation.
