COLOMBO (News 1st): Seven deaths were reported due to road accidents on Monday (Apr. 26), Sri Lanka Police said.
Of the seven deaths, five people died in road accidents that were reported in a 24-hour window that ended on Tuesday morning (Apr. 27), while the remaining two are victims of accidents reported a few days back, Police Spokesperson DIG Ajith Rohana told News 1st on Tuesday (Apr. 27).
Upon analyzing the accident statistics, the Deputy Police Chief observed that of the seven deaths, four are pillion riders and motorcycle riders.
“There is an increasing trend of road accidents in respect of motorcycles. Motorcycle riders and pillion riders are becoming victims of road accidents. Therefore, all relevant measures should be taken to ensure road safety and prevent road accidents,” DIG Ajith Rohana noted.
According to Police Spokesperson DIG Ajith Rohana, special traffic operations are conducted across the country to prevent road accidents, while Highway Traffic Police Division has also been informed to conduct special operations in respect of vehicles that use the expressways.
