COLOMBO (News 1st): An official celebration was held in line with the 25th Anniversary of Sri Lanka’s victory at the 1996 Cricket World Cup at Temple Trees today.

The celebration of the “25th Anniversary of the World Cup Win” was held under the patronage of Prime Minister – Mahinda Rajapaksa.

The celebration was organized by the Prime Minister’s Office, Ministry of Sports and Youth Affairs and Sri Lanka Cricket.

Speaking at the event, the Captain of the 1996 CWC Winning Team – Arjuna Ranatunga said that it has been 25 years since Sri Lanka won the World Cup, but everyone in this country still remembers the winning moment.

Ranatunge said there are some things that former players cannot do, but they have to let the able people handle it when they can’t.

He said that he would like to request the Prime Minister to appoint a proper committee to look into the abyss Sri Lankan Cricket has fallen into at present.

Ranatunge said money is flowing overseas, best people are migrating, and coaches are leaving their positions.

Arjuna Ranatunge concluded his speech by thanking the organizers for inviting all the players who played at the 1996 Cricket World Cup and making a request to fix Sri Lankan Cricket under the leadership of the Prime Minister and the Minister of Sports.

Also speaking at the event, Prime Minister – Mahinda Rajapaksa recalled the day the Sri Lankan Cricket team arrived in the country after winning the World Cup and how the then-Captain Ranatunga took the World Cup trophy to late Minister Gamini Dissanayake’s residence following their return as a mark of respect for the statesmen.

Prime Minister said today is the day Sri Lanka celebrates 25 years of humanity on the Cricketing field.

In line with the 25th Anniversary of winning the Cricket World Cup, a special Satana program was telecast on our sister channel; Sirasa TV at Ratmalana Stein Studios, last night with the participation of the 1996 World Cup-winning Captain – Arjuna Ranatunga and his teammates.

This was how the World Champions celebrated the 25th Anniversary of winning the World Cup during the program.
