Colombo (News 1st); Chairman of the Inter-University Student’s Federation Venerable Ratkarawwe Jinarathana Thero was arrested during a protest in Wijerama, Colombo on Tuesday (12) for the illegal use of a megaphone, disregarding police orders not to do so.
The Inter-University Students Federation gathered opposite the Prime Minister’s residence in Colombo to stage a protest citing several students who sat for the 2019 G. C. E. Advanced Level was unjustly treated when enrolling students to universities based on the cut-off mark.
When Venerable Ratkarawwe Jinarathana Thero attempted to address the crowd using a megaphone the police foiled it, noting it was illegal, and in order to use such a device prior approval is needed.
Thereafter, he was taken away by Police.
Following these events, 40 student representatives were permitted to meet with the Secretary to the Prime Minister Gamini Senarath for talks and it was agreed to meet with a competent authority later this week.
