CID investigates 71 online scams: SSP Jaliya Senaratne

COLOMBO (News 1st): The Criminal Investigations Department is conducting investigations regarding 71 scams committed online this year, police said. "Based on complaints received, the Cyber Crime Unit of the CID is conducting investigations into 14 online scams related to the provision of foreign employment, SSP Jaliya Senaratne, the Police Spokesperson said on Tuesday (Sep 08). According to SSP Senaratne, investigations are underway into 28 crimes of deception related to lottery winnings and other prices; of the total 28 complaints, four are related to vehicle prizes, and 20 are on lottery winnings. SSP Senaratne further went onto note that information has come to light regarding an online racket, which requests people to deposit money to certain accounts in order to pay Customs charges and clear cash prizes from overseas. The Police Spokesperson advised the general public NOT to be deceived by such online crimes, NOT to respond to messages or e-mails, which claim the recipient has won certain prizes, and NOT to disclose personal details.
