Colombo (News 1st) - The 43rd session of the United Nations Human Rights Council began today (Feb 24). The 43rd session was attended by foreign ministers, heads of missions and ambassadors of member countries. United Nations' Secretary-General António Guterres and United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights Michelle Bachelet were among the many who addressed the opening session of today's event. Climate change, global warming, suppression to freedom of speech and strengthening the human rights of all communities were among the main topics discussed. "Human rights is facing many challenges, and no country is immune. There are billion in war zones, trafficking affecting many around the world. Journalists are being killed. Global hunger is on the rise. People are being left behind. Fears are on the rise, divisions are expanding. The rule of law is being eroded. Sovereignty remains a principle of international human rights relations. But sovereignty cannot be a pretext to exploit human rights. Human rights and national sovereignty goes hand in hand.." - António Guterres, Secretary-General of the United Nations "Threats to human rights and peace may be rising, but so are practical action level solutions. Broad participation of people, including young people, and institutions that are transparent and accountable can advance social harmony and boost economic development. We are increasing our corporation to help governments provide greater and more equitable access to fundamental services while strengthening our practical assistance to meet economic and practical challenges.." - Michelle Bachelet, United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights
