Colombo (News 1st): JVP Politburo Member Wasantha Samarasinghe speaking in Anuradhapura spoke about the citizenship issue of Gotabaya Rajapaksa. He noted that the 19th amendment to the constitution very clearly states that an individual with dual citizenship or a citizen of another nation cannot join the political sphere of this country. He said if by chance Gotabaya Rajapaksa wins this election and is elected as the president, someone can go to the supreme court against him and say that he is unfit to be president as he has dual citizenship.
Samarasinghe added that at that occasion, this matter should be proven before the supreme court and if at that point he is unable to prove that he is not an American citizen, then that petition can be taken up and it can be decided that he is unsuitable to be the president of this country, similar to Geetha Kumarasinghe losing her parliamentary seat. He noted that there is no need to go to the elections commissioner as these people have a lot of lawyers working for them.
Wasantha Samarasinghe said on one side they have Gotabaya's lawyer lying that documents were presented to the elections commissioner and the commissioner replied saying they don't want the documents, nor did they see the documents. He noted that the election act needs to be amended in accordance with the 19th amendment and that Ali Sabry is lying before this entire country.
