President emphasizes the need to join hands to eradicate terrorism

Colombo (News 1st): The inaugural ceremony of the Conference on Dialogue of Asian Civilizations was held this morning in Beijing, China with the participation of President Maithripala Sirisena as a special invitee. China's first ever Conference on Dialogue of Asian Civilizations which was held under the patronage of Chinese President Xi Jinping was attended by representatives from 47 Asian and other invited nations. The event seeks to promote intercultural dialogue in view of building an “Asian Community of Shared Future” which will focus on cultural diversity, exchanges and mutual learning of Asia civilizations. It aims to enhance the rich cultural lives of Asians and contribute to vibrant regional development. Speaking at the event President Maithripala Sirisena noted that following the attacks carried out by extremist groups in Sri Lanka, which took away the lives of hundreds of people, Sri Lankans now live with tension. He added they see the need for a more comprehensive international program to protect the identity and respect the nationality of all people whilst strengthening relationships. The head of state said it is important to defeat international terrorism and extremism, particularly terrorism that is created through radicalism, and ensure that all nationalities live in peace and harmony. The Conference on Dialogue of Asian Civilizations continues until the 22nd of May.
