COLOMBO (News 1st) - Despite the slight rain reported in Kandy, Kotmale and several areas, the majority of people in various districts suffer due to lack of water. According to the latest statistics of the Disaster Management Centre, more than 321,000 people are affected by the prevailing droughts. The drought has hit the Kegalle, Puttalam, Kurunegala, Vavuniya and Jaffna districts the most. One of the villagers told one of our correspondents that they have no way of growing crops as they do not have water. He also added that they absolutely have nothing to celebrate the New Year Festival. It was also reported that lives of over 1000 persons in the Ampara District have been crippled by the drought.
