COLOMBO (News 1st) – Five suspects were arrested at the BIA this morning (February 10) for attempting to smuggle a stock of cigarettes from the United Arab Emirates.

Customs Spokesperson Sunil Jarathne noted that 286 cigarette cartons valued at over Rs. 3,146,000 was discovered in their possession.

The suspects have been identified as residents of Meerigama and Colombo.

Following investigations carried out by the customs officials each of these suspects were fined Rs. 150,000. The spokesperson added that the stock of cigarettes were confiscated.
