Colombo (News1st): UPFA MP Keheliya Rambukwella appearing on the News1st Newline program on Tuesday (Dec 12) spoke on why the convening of parliament was illegal. Rambukwella noted that when reconvening parliament after a prorogation or for a new session, there are accepted norms, practices, and traditions that are followed by Parliament. He stated that the standing orders do not stand alone, it is part of the constitution that is blended into it. Keheliya noted that on the first day, that is the 14, the leader of the house Dinesh Gunawardena was appointed and his office was given to him officially by Speaker Karu Jayasuriya. He said the seat was also given to him on that day, therefore the practice should have been for him to adjourn the parliament and fix the next date. Senior Lawyer Gomin Dayasiri reacting to Rambukwella's statement noted that the MP is partially correct and partially incorrect because he looks at the situation clearly from his point of view and from that of the Joint Opposition. "It condemns the speaker of the actions of the UNP, it all started with Mahinda Rajapaksa's assuming to be Prime Minister," said Gomin Dayasiri. Dayasiri said that Mahinda's group is not attending Parliamentary sessions because they do not have a majority.  "They don't have the 113 needed and that is the main reason why they are making all these excuses," said the Senior Lawyer.
