COLOMBO (News 1st): President Maithripala Sirisena convened a special discussion on drug trafficking and prevention of crime, where he said that he made the decision to implement the death penalty on drug traffickers who have been sentenced.

However, the President said that when he summoned the relevant records, there is no one to impose the death sentence on. “That means there are no records,” he said. The Head of State went on to say that a separate investigation needs to be conducted on the matter. He then went on to request for the records of those who have been sentenced to death, but continue to carry on with their ‘drug business’, adding that “those are the ones who are most suited for the death penalty.”

“All the drug traffickers who have been sentenced to death have appealed their case before me. I hope to establish a special committee to look into this matter.” – he added. The President had summoned the Secretary of Defense, the Attorney General, the Inspector General of Police and the Commissioner General of Excise for this discussion.
