COLOMBO (News 1st) – The National Vap Festival for the Maha Season got underway at the Sandagirigoda paddy field in Thissamaharama under the auspices of President Maithripala Sirisena.
The event saw the attendance of Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa as well.
Addressing the occasion, President Sirisena made a special announcement on Mahinda Amaraweera. He stated that Amaraweera will be reappointed as the Minister of Agriculture. The president continued to say that he is pleased with the service rendered by MP Amaraweera to the agriculture sector within the last few months by introducing new technologies for the upliftment of the sector.
President Sirisena said that he will also hold discussions with the elections commission and take steps to hold the provincial council elections as soon as possible with a view of strengthening the democracy of the country.
He added that although the officials can operate without a circular there needs to be a political leadership to do what’s best for the people adding that if there is anything that obstructs the circulars being used for the betterment of the people that it needs to be changed.
Also addressing the event, UPFA MP Mahinda Amaraweera stated that he acted according to the instructions given to him by the president when he was handed over with the position.
Amaraweera continued to say that the president had instructed him to go in for a self-sufficient system and to produce food locally for exporting purposes as well. He added that the Ministry has implemented a national policy and that therefore when the government changes or a new minister comes in that the country will have a national policy for agriculture.
