201 wild elephants reported dead in the year 2018 due to human related activities

COLOMBO (News 1st) - A total of 201 Wild Elephants died as a result of human-related activities so far this year. According to the Wildlife Department, the 65 elephants had died due to poaching, electrocution, eating man-made explosives and poisoning. 4% of the elephant deaths are caused by collisions with trains. A majority of the elephants died in the Moneragala, Hambantota, Kurunegala and Polonnaruwa Districts. The Department of Wildlife has taken steps to located and apprehend those responsible for killing elephants and they would also be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.
