Postal strike enters day 15

COLOMBO (News 1st) - Postal workers who are on strike staged a demonstration opposite the Central Mail Exchange today (June 25). It has been 15 days since the postal workers launched their trade union action in protests against the current recruitment procedure. Around 25 postal trade unions took part in the demonstration. Postal workers in several parts of the country also staged demonstrations in support of the trade union action. According to the Co-convener of the Joint Postal Trade Union Front, Rohitha Jayasinghe, they were given a discussion at the Salaries Commission at 10 AM tomorrow (June 26th) to resolve the issues concerning Circular No. 6 of 2006. When contacted, Minister of Posts, Postal Services and Muslim Religious Affairs, Abdul Haleem said solutions to these issues will be provided by tomorrow (June 26). Minister Abdul Haleem said a special program is in place to distribute the mail which has stockpiled due to the strike action. The Minister said both local and foreign mail have stockpiled at post offices as a result of the strike action.
