COLOMBO (News 1st) - The rainy weather condition that prevailed over the country is easing, however, reports suggest the water level of the Attanagalu Oya remains unchanged.
Around 11 AM today (May 26) our correspondents reported that a number of areas in the Gampaha District continued to receive rainfall. The water levels of the Attanagalu Oya have already reached flood level. Later on Saturday, it was reported that the Gampaha - Ganemulla main road was four feet under floodwaters.
Furthermore around 3 PM as the flood water flowed downstream, the Ja-Ela Canal overflowed and submerged a number of areas including Ja-Elathura, low lands in the Ja-Ela town and Bopitiya. With the rise in flood water level, there was a risk of the banks of the Ja-Ela canal being washed away.
The locals who had understood the risk had placed sandbags on the banks of the canal since Wednesday and the Sri Lanka Navy supported their efforts today (May 26).
