President Sirisena elaborates on the SLFP and possible successors

President Maithripala Sirisena announced that the Pakistani Prime Minister has promised to immediately dispatch 40,000 metric tonnes of Urea fertilizer to Sri Lanka. This announcement was made during a conference held in Colombo.

The Local Government Candidates Conference commenced, with religious observances, at the Sugathadasa Indoor Stadium today, December 29.

Candidates of thirty one political parties, who joined hands with the Sri Lanka Freedom Party and the United People’s Freedom Alliance, to contest 2018 local government election were present, together with MPs and ministers.

The present candidates made a pledge to commit themselves to clean politics.

President Sirisena,, expressing his views at the conference stated that there were serious issues in the country, and political opponents used these issues to criticise the government’s foreign policy.

He stated that the letter he wrote to Russian President Vladimir Putin on him lifting up the ban imposed on Sri Lankan Tea resulted in a win for the country.

He further stated that “The fertiliser shortage in the country is widely criticised. I spoke to Pakistan Prime Minister Mohammed Sharif over the phone last week and asked him to help us in this time of need.”

” After my term end, the position of Chairman of this party will be given to one of you and not to a member of my family” said the President Sirisena

The president also stated that the country is now facing a major obstacle, corrupted politicians is a   misfortune has befallen on our country.

Furthermore, President Sirisena said  that he needs a group of politicians who do not line their pockets, and who do not destroy state resources for the personal use.

Minister Mahinda Amaraweera, General Secretary of UPFA, who was present at the meeting stated that the president today has set an example and enforced a programme where he would be the first to take action if anything wrong is committed within the government.”

Minister Amaraweera further stated that there will not be any room left for future government fraud and corruption, and that this assurance is more important to them.

Minister Duminda Dissanayake, General Secretary of SLFP, expressing his thoughts at the conference stated that the leadership given to this country has further strengthened the SLFP and the UPFA. And that therefore, this strength should not be tainted.

He made a request from the present candidates to act in a manner where the honour of the President will be protected.

Minister S.B.Dissanayake, Treasurer of SLFP, stated thatthe UNP has made great attempts to process with the old electoral system, but the Sri Lanka Muslim Congress opposed.

“Dinesh Gunawardena wanted to retain the preferential votes system. We had issues and we faced obstacles. Despite all of that, SLFP was revived, the UPFA got a new lease of life and we are proud to lead you today …” said Minister S.B. Dissanayake

President Maithripala Sirisena concluded the conference by handing over the letters to the candidates who will be contesting for the local government elections 2018.
