The people who have lost their lands because of the Central Expressway project staged a demonstration opposite the Ministry of Highways and Higher Education today (October 19).
The protesters charge that they have not received the compensation that was promised.
“..They took over our lands by force through the 38 (a) clause. there wasn’t an official estimate ..”
“..they said basil rajapaksa stole during the time of mahinda rajapaksa, now who is doing it, is it lakshman kiriella?”
“..they are only paying 35,000 rupees for locations which received an estimate of 200,000 rupees..”
Several protesters received the opportunity to enter the ministry premises and engage in a discussion with an additional secretary.
“..we are ready to resolve this through discussions, else minister Kiriella we will come to see you.” said North Western Provincial Councillor Namal Karunaratne in a message to Lakshman Kiriella, the minister of Highways and Higher Education.
“you cannot escape and we will not allow you to escape. we know where your house is. this is a warning, you can never know when hundreds of people will surround the ministry. If we don’t receive a discussion within 2 weeks, we will take sterner action..” added the JVP Provincial Councillor
Meanwhile the subject became a heated topic in Parliament today.
