At an event the Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe recently attended, the people asked him to help them by renovating a road.Responding to the people, the Ppemier basically said “You give us the power and I’ll provide the money.”

This matter was discussed on our NewsLine programme headed by Faraz Shauketaly. The guest on the show was former COPE chairman D. E. W. Gunasekara.

To begin the discussion the host of the show Faraz Shauketaly recalled the recent Sil Redi issue.Lalith Weeratunga and Anusha Palpita were convicted. Why? – because they misused the funds of the TRC.

Faraz pointed out that the PM’s statement, in essence, the same thing; “We’ll spend the money, we’ll give you the roads, you vote for us.”

The former COPE chairman D. E. W. Gunasekara pointed out that this is a way of corrupting the people who are the voters.Gunasekara pointed out that it is not just the politicians who are getting corrupted, “even the voters are getting corrupted.”

He pointed out that the Prime Minister’s statement of “vote for us, we will give you the road.” amounts to “rape of democracy”.

Interestingly, today, October 3, is the 70th anniversary of Parliament Democracy.
