Meethotamulla garbage dump collapse: Six hospitalised, armed forces step in

Six people have been hospitalised after a section of the Meethotamulla garbage dump in Kolonnawa collapsed.

The collapse of the dump also damaged over 50 houses. A section of the garbage dump in the area where the Rahula Vidyalaya is located collapsed at around 3 p.m. on Friday.

Locals, police and security forces rushed to rescue those who were buried under the pile of garbage.The garbage dump collapsed several times and rescue services found it extremely difficult to reach those trapped under.

The injured were rushed to the National Hospital.

President Maithripala Sirisena has instructed the Minister of Disaster Management, the Commanders of the Three Armed Forces and the Inspector General of Police to immediately respond to the situation and provide relief.

The Inspector General of Police and the Commander of the Sri Lanka Army visited the scene to examine the damage this morning.

The government has requested the general public to refrain from visiting the area.The government says that this could hamper the search and rescue as well as relief operation.

The Sri Lanka Air Force has dispatched a Bell 212 Helicopter to assist in the relief operations.
