There were multiple media reports recently regarding a possible shake up in the ranks of the United National Party. Journalists questioned Minister of Regional Development, Field Marshal Sarath Fonseka, regarding these reports, during an event in Kelaniya.
When questioned about the reports that Akila Viraj Kariyawasam would take over responsibilities as the General Secretary of the UNP, Field Marshal Fonseka expressed confidence that he would be able to carry out the duties of the General Secretary as he is a talented and efficient young politician.
The minister also responded to a question regarding reports that he would take over duties as an assistant leader of the UNP, leap-frogging many party stalwarts. Minister Fonseka noted that although he had joined the UNP recently, he had been engaged in the battle against the Rajapaksa regime for quite some time, and having an individual such as himself outside the party, aided the efforts of the UNP.
He also said that he would receive such an appointment only if it is approved by the UNP working committee.
Commenting on the possible shake up in the UNP Leadership, former state minister Professor Rajiva Wijesinha stated that this decision shows a clear sign that UNP Leader PM Ranil Wickremesinghe is not interested in talent, intelligence or experience.
Prof. Wijeysinghe added that having an individual such as Akila Viraj Kariyawasam would enable the UNP leader to do what ever he wants .
