The Finance Ministry has extended the granting of tax concessions when importing rice, until May 31, following instructions by the President.
The Ministry said the gazette notification in this regard has also been published.
The time period of the tax concession was due to expire on Friday March 31.
Under the concession, only a special goods tax of Rs. 5 is charged per kilogramme of rice.
A kilogramme of rice was subject to a tax amounting to over Rs. 50 per kilogramme, before the tax concession was granted.
