Sri Lankan President has been extended an official invitation by his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin. Accepting the invitation, President Maithripala Sirisena is set to depart for the world’s largest nation on Wednesday (March 22).
The two Presidents are scheduled to meet on the 23rd of March.
This is the first visit to the Russian Federation by a Sri Lankan head of state since 1974 Moscow visit of Prime Minister Sirimavo Bandaranayaike.
The visit will also coincide with celebrations to mark the 60th anniversary of bilateral relations between Russia and Sri Lanka.
Discussions during the visit are expected to focus on improving bilateral trade and long term relations between the two countries.
Furthermore, the following agreements are set to be inked during the visit: Fisheries, Science & Technology, tourism and Education.
President Sirisena will be accompanied by five cabinet ministers including Minister of foreign Affairs Managala Samaraweera.
