Sri Lanka Freedom Party Parliamentarian Mahindananda Aluthgamage raised several questions in parliament today, March 10, with regard to the cancellation of a deal to purchase aircraft for SriLankan Airlines.
Hon. Minister, you said there was no loss. You made a statement to Cabinet recently and you were subsequently summoned to Temple Trees and you were scolded by the Prime Minister. On the 15th of January 2015, after the new government came into power, a Cabinet decision was taken to cancel the order for the three aircraft. Cabinet made this decision and then informed your Ministry to negotiate with this company to bring down the amount that they were asking for as compensation. When this deal was made, the subject Minister was unaware, the Secretary to the Ministry was not aware, the letters by the Secretary were disregarded, the Attorney Generals advice was not sought. You are the General Secretary of the UNP, but they disregarded you when this deal was being formulated. SriLankan Airlines comes under your purview. Yet, without anyone being aware and without anyone providing approval, SriLankan Airlines signed a deal with Aircab and paid two installments. It was then that you were informed. Do you accept this???
