The government has focused its attention on increasing the number of judges in the country with the expectation of expediting judicial proceedings.
Minister of Justice Wijeyadasa Rajapakshe, during a function held in Anuradhapura today, pointed out that the Supreme Court is struggling to handle the number of cases being brought before them, and that the case load is such that one judge cannot complete the proceedings.
The government intends to create a massive change in the judicial system through a new constitution and increase the number of Supreme Court judges through the constitutional amendment
“We hope to increase the number of Supreme Court judges through the constitutional amendment. This is the only way in which we can reduce the time taken on each case. We also hope to draw up legislation which will allow us to increase the number of high court judges from 75 to 85…”
The Minister of Justice also noted that attention has been focussed on creating a separate area in court complexes which could be used to protect the identity of testifying witnesses.
