A passenger travelling on a train died after colliding with a railway gate in the Boralessa area in Wennappuwa.
The passenger, who was travelling on a train plying from Chilaw to Colombo at dawn on November 15, died when the lock of a railway gate became undone and struck the passenger as the train passed the Keeragala railway crossing.
An eyewitness said that the 55-year-old passenger named Rapiyal Pinthu who sustained serious injuries in the accident, died on the morning of November 20, while receiving treatment at the National Hospital in Colombo, and that he was a father of three daughters aged 25, 23 and 16, and was a bus conductor.
Operating Superintendent of the Department of Railways Wijaya Samarasinghe said, the gate had been operated by a gatekeeper attached to the police, and that the Department of Railways is not responsible for this incident.
“However an operations inspector has been deployed to conduct investigations into the accident involving a passenger”, he added, “The railway service will follow a process of compensation as per the investigation report”.
When News 1st made further inquiries regarding the incident, police stated that a special investigation has commenced.
