Universities that are not functioning at the moment will most likely commence operations by Monday, August 8.

Several rounds of discussions were held on Saturday between the subject minister and trade unions. Discussions were held between State Minister of Higher Education and Trade Unions at the Ministry of Higher Education.

State Minister of Higher Education, Mohan Lal Grero pointed out that several of the seven demands have been met but one of their main demands – increase of arrears allowance from 20% to 50% – officials of the Finance Ministry agreed to allocate 360 million for this from the next budget. However it seemed that the non-academic staff was not satisfied with this solution.

Accordingly another round of discussions were held at ministry premises on Saturday afternoon. Subsequent to this meeting, the minister said that the trade union action will be called off by Monday.

Chairman of the University Trade Union Joint Committee, Edward Malwattage stated that a partial agreement was reached following the discussion. And the State Minister has promised to have a discussion on Monday to a complete agreement once discussions are held with the Ministry Secretary.

“Since we did not come to an agreement, we will continue with our trade union action tomorrow as well”, said the chairman.
