Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe attended the opening session of the 12th World Islamic Economic Forum in Indonesia on Tuesday, August 2.
Speaking at the session held at the Jakarta Convention Centre the Prime Minister noted that the 269 hectares which is reclaimed from the sea, will provide a base for logistics and financial services in South Asia to complement the chain of business hubs from Hong-Kong to Singapore and Dubai.
He added that these initiatives will be supported by two international airports and harbours located in Katunayake, Hambantota and Colombo. An agreement is signed with Surbana Jurong of Singapore to prepare a master plan for the Trincomalee economic development project.
He went on to note that the economic technology cooperation agreement between India and Sri Lanka will be finalised by the end of the year. The FTA with China will be finalised in 2017 and that negotiations with Singapore on a FTA will be concluded soon.
Explaining further, he added noted that they hope to explore other trade agreements with Bay of Bengal nations such as Indonesia, Malaysia,Thailand and Myanmar and also with West Asia.
