Hasini Shehara is just a memory as she became the another victim of the human – elephant conflict.
Hasini was a grade 3 student of the Balaharuwa Junior School. She was on her to school with her grandfather when she took her final breath. The little girl had met her father early morning, after a lapse of three months.
Hasini Shehara’s father serves in the army and had arrived home. With a heart full of dreams, she was to celebrate her birthday on August 4 and was excited to move into a new home with her family.
However, all those dreams were shattered and it will be her motionless body that will be brought to the new house. This is not the first fatality reported from the Balaharuwa village. Hasini is the fifth person to fall victim to a wild elephant in a span of two months. Friends of Hasini Shehara stepped on to the streets on Wednesday, July 27 demanding for solutions to the human elephant conflict.
Principal of the Balaharuwa Junior School, J.W. Saman Sriyalal stated that the grief-stricken villagers protested at the Kuda Oya junction by obstructing the Wellawaya – Colombo main road.
Vehicular movement along the road was disrupted for more than seven hours. They charge that a responsible official should intervene to provide a permanent solution to the problem.
