The Think Again national public service initiative, which prompts the citizen to rethink their decision at the ballot box, worked off in the Colombo, Nuwara Eliya and Batticaloa districts on Tuesday

Our team in Nuwara Eliya commenced the campaign in the district after receiving the blessings of the Chief Incumbent of the International Buddhist Centre in Nuwara Eliya, Venerable Kiri-oruwe Dheerananda Thera. Once they receive the vote and enter either the parliament, provincial council, urban council or pradeshiya sabha, they fulfill their own agendas. They rarely fulfill the people’s expectations, he said.

The team visited several areas in the district including the Nuwara Eliya town, Seetha Eliya and Hawa Eliya. Residents of Seetha Eliya lamented to News 1st that they have been informed to evacuate lands on which they have dwelled on for numerous years.

Nuwara Eliya is a tourist hot-spot that is immensely popular with both locals and tourists due to the temperate climate and scenic beauty.

However, these residents who have been fighting for land rights on the boundaries of the iconic race course for 150 years, have been unable to enjoy the beauty of their environment.

They need to clarify what they mean by unauthorised lands. We are not unauthorised. People were settled here even when the foreigners were ruling. Therefore sir, they cannot say that we are squatters. If they give us land anywhere else within the municipal limits, we are willing to go, but they will not do that. So they should give us rights to build our homes here. These promises are made during elections, but they disappear soon afterwards.

The Think Again campaign which has promoted a renaissance in leadership and civic responsibility, will be underway on Wednesday as well.
