Residents of many villages in the Puttalam district staged a demonstration demanding immediate solutions for the human – elephant conflict

According to our correspondent,  the Puttalam – Kurunegala main road was closed for around six hours owing to the protest. Residents from the Karuwalagaswewa, Anamaduwa and Puttalam divisional secretariat areas gathered for the demonstration which began at around 7 a.m on Wednesday.

The protestors brought with them crops that had been damaged by wild elephants and obstructed the Galkulama junction along the Puttalam – Kurunegala main road.

He added that severe traffic congestion was reported on the Puttalam – Kurunegala main road owing to the protest. The OIC of the Puttalam Police and the Assistant Director of the Wildlife Zone arrived at the location and promised to resolve their issues.

The officials engaged in discussions with ten protesters and agreed to resolve their issues through a systematic approach. A decision was reached to construct temporary electric fences surrounding the cultivations, and to repair electric fences which are disconnected.The protesters dispersed following the discussions.
