The Defense Ministry had extended the amnesty period to return illegal weapons considering public requests.

The amnesty period will be effective from May 30 to June 17th. The Ministry of Defense announced that Illegal weapons can be handed over to the nearest Divisional Secretariat, District Secretary offices and police stations.

A communique notes that persons returning weapons during this amnesty period will not be subject to any legal action or penalty for possessing a firearm. A similar amnesty period had been declared from 25th April to 05th May where 423 weapons were returned.

During that amnesty period, the majority of weapons were returned from the Gampaha District.
