The protest staged by the miners of the Bogala graphite mine, from 1670 feet below ground, citing several demands was called off on Wednesday afternoon after authorities agreed to grant a number of demands.
Over 50 miners engaged in this Satyagraha campaign alleging that their wages have not been increased and that they have been denied their rights.
The miners demanded a salary increase of Rs.10000. However, the authorities agreed to grant a salary increment of Rs. 5000 with effect from January this year and agreed to make the arrears of the salary payments as well.
According to demands, they also agreed to provide uniforms and grant them twenty one days of medical leave.
Incidentally, two miners were admitted to the Karawanella Hospital at the conclusion of the protest.
