Seventeen Sri Lankan nationals who allegedly attempted to illegally cross the country’s maritime border, in order to take a treacherous journey to Australia, were taken to the custody of the Navy and handed over to the CID thereafter.

The group of Sri Lankan nationals who attempted to take up an illegal journey, were arrested by the Navy off the coast of Galle, based on a tip off.

A woman, two young girls and two young boys were among those arrested upon arrival of the naval vessel Suranimala.

The group of Sri Lankan migrants set out to sea on March 1, aboard a fishing vessel named Vins 3 from the Negombo area.
