Speaking in parliament, Minister of Foreign Affairs Mangala Samaraweera commented on investment opportunities in Sri Lanka.

Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mangala Samaraweera stated that Sri Lanka has had investment agreements with the US, UK, and Germany for decades, but the current government has ratified agreements which will secure investments from rapidly growing China and India as well.

He added that a diverse of FDI (Foreign Direct Investment) is important to reduce the dependence on apparel and tea, which accounts for over half the value of exports.

Explaining further, he added that an international environment must be created for international competitors to create world class companies such as apparel firms, IT firms, hotel management companies and banks. He said:

They are sectors that are open to investments from abroad, so they learn, adapt and they compete.
